Exosomes vs PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for Skin Rejuvenation
What are exosomes?
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles released by cells that contain lipids, amino acids, peptides, growth factors, and RNA. They promote the creation of new blood vessels and the growth of fibroblasts (active cells in the skin), increasing the skin's supply of oxygen as well as the production of collagen and elastin. Exosomes are also responsible for cell-to-cell communication, triggering the body's natural healing response.
Recent studies have shown exosomes' promise for treating a variety of medical conditions, as well as for their anti-aging effects and ability to repair tissue. All types of cells secrete exosomes. In particular, platelet-, placenta-, adipose-, and plant-derived exosomes have been distinguished for their therapeutic potential.
How are Exosomes different from Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Exosomes both release antioxidants and growth factors, boosting the production of collagen in the skin.
PRP treatments make use of the regenerative properties of our own blood; the concentration of growth factors can vary with each person's age and health. On the other hand, exosome therapies rely on exosomes that have been extracted in a laboratory from different tissue sources, including healthy and purified donor platelets. As a result, exosome products are generally consistent in their potency and concentration of growth factors. There are no studies comparing the efficacy of PRP to different exosome preparations or concentrations.
Both exosomes and PRP solutions are applied topically. Microneedling can be used as an adjunct to create channels for the product to seep deeper into the skin layers.
Ultimately, treatments with both exosomes and PRP are non-invasive solutions to boost the body's own regenerative powers for brighter, healthier skin. Exosomes and PRP can even be combined for a supercharged treatment.
